The shank is the part that goes into the collet, and it's the easiest thing to get wrong when you order. A 3 mm burr won't seat in a 1/4" die grinder, and a 6 mm shank won't fit a rotary tool. Past the fit, the shank size also sets how rigid the burr runs — and that changes the finish.
Here's how to pick without guessing.
3 mm (about 1/8") — the small standard. Fits rotary tools, flexible shafts, and smaller die grinders.
6 mm (1/4") — the heavy standard. Fits full-size die grinders and most industrial air tools.
You'll occasionally run into 2.35 mm or an exact 1/4", but 3 mm and 6 mm cover the vast majority of carbide burrs out there.

When in doubt, measure the collet. Ordering the wrong shank is the most common "defect" return we see — and it's never a defect, just a mismatch.
A thicker shank flexes less under load. On a big burr doing heavy removal, a 6 mm shank stays put where a 3 mm shank might whip. That's why production die grinders run 1/4".
But bigger isn't always better. In a tight rotary tool, you want the 3 mm — a 6 mm shank won't go in, and forcing an adapter just invites runout.
Mostly handheld die grinding? Standardize on 6 mm (1/4"). One collet, maximum rigidity.
Rotary tools and detail work? 3 mm is your size.

Can I use a collet adapter to fit 3 mm in a 1/4" tool?
You can, but an adapter adds runout and weakens the hold. Fine for occasional use; for production, match the shank to the tool.
Does shank size change how fast I run the burr?
Not directly — RPM follows the burr head diameter, not the shank. But a 6 mm shank lets you run a larger head steadier, which is why big burrs feel smoother on a 1/4" grinder.
